Suzuki presented its first, and only, rotary engine powered motorcycle at the Tokyo Show in late 1973. The RE5, as the model was called, was Suzuki's technical flagship at the time and a fine motorcycle. The engine, originated from NSU in Germany, was smooth, quiet, powerful and had hardly any vibrations, thanks to its construction with no parts moving back-and-forth like the usual Otto engine. The rotary, or Wankel, engine has a number of benefits over standard engines including a lack of camshafts, intake and exhaust valves, and a reduced number of moving parts. Many manufacturers experimented with the engine type and some prototypes were presented in the early 70's but Suzuki was the only motorcycle manufacturer that used the rotary engine on a mass produced bike. Suzuki presented the engine sometimes as 1000cc, because some regulatory bodies de-rate the engine by doubling the chamber capacity. The actual cylinder capacity was 497 cc. The design of the RE5 was not as revolutionary as its engine. The instrument panel and tail light were contained in cylindrical shapes to play on the rotary theme, otherwise the bike looked a lot like the company's two-stroke flagship GT750. Also included was a special heat shield since the rotary engine design tended to make exhaust pipes hot enough to burn riders' legs. What happened? The customers did find the RE5 interesting, but not many but not many of them actually bought the model. Perhaps it was the new technology that scared off ...

The Importance of a Using a Motorcycle Cover

Motorcycle covers are an often overlooked alternative to keeping your motorcycle in a garage or under larger cover. Whilst they are not as ideal due to a lack of airflow, and keeping in condensation (although this is relieved by higher quality breathable and waterproof contemporary materials) they are still great at protecting your motorcycle from the elements.

Even if you do have a garage, then fitting a motorcycle cover will protect from elements inside your garage, such as dust, dirt and insects to a degree. Most garages are not kept at a stable temperature and insulated, so a lightweight breathable cover helps the build up of condensation and therefore mold, which will help protect the finish of the motorcycle.

Outside you will need a more hardcore motorbike cover. It will have to withstand harsher elements, from wind, rain and UV sun-rays. Whilst these issues are not major in small doses, if you are leaving your motorcycle out for a long period (for example, you ride in summer and keep the motorcycle stored outside over winter) then the finish is compromised. UV rays fade paintwork (red is the worst for this). Still water can leave stains (from rain). Wind can take small objects like stones or twigs from trees and scratch the paintwork blowing against the motorcycle.

Motorcycle covers are not perfect, finding the match between breathable and weatherproof is the biggest challenge. You will still need to give your motorcycle a buff up after the bad weather season, but it will be a smaller task than if the cover is not there, and there will be less long term damage to your motorcycle paint and chrome too.

Another big benefit of having a motorcycle cover is for security reasons. Sure, a knife will go through it, even if it is tied down, and the motorcycle is chained to a solid object. But if it's hiding under a sheet, it's a lot less attractive to thieves than them seeing the nice shiny expensive object underneath.

For these reasons a motorcycle cover is an essential item for any enthusiast who cares for their motorcycle, or just wants it to maintain it's value by conserving its finish.

Care Tips for Your Motorcycle Saddlebags

If there's one thing you can't ride without (aside from your protective gear of course), it's your motorcycle saddlebags . 3. Polish your leather saddlebags once in a while. But don't let your saddlebag's pores get clogged with the polish. Make sure you spread the polish cream evenly and thinly on the surface and not to concentrate on one area only.

4. Apply water protector on your saddlebags to protect it from rain or water and so that there won't be watermarks on it. You can also waterproof your biker saddlebags by applying mink oil or silicone spray. But because this may darken the color of the leather, it is suggested that you try it on first on a small area of the leather that is not so visible. If ever your saddlebags get wet, never dry it out by putting in direct contact with heat like the radiator. Heat will absorb the oil of the leather and leave it dry. Instead, let it dry naturally by placing in room temperature.
